Teachers of Color Matter (TOCM) envisions a public education landscape that leverages the identity, purpose, and cultural capital that teachers of color bring to the classroom for positive student outcomes and accessibility.

TOCM operates from the perspective that K-12 schools are “white spaces” and support white supremacy norms and values. As such, teacher education and the teaching profession have not been structured to support the needs and experiences of Teachers of Color. TOCM achieves their mission through recruitment and retention efforts, self-advocacy strategies, and mental health retreats and resources.

Teachers of Color Matter offers a unique and fresh perspective in service of TOC retention. Teachers of Color shoulder additional emotional weight and expectations. This extra layer of emotionality is not accounted for and can become compounded. TOCM marks this distinction through a differentiated support approach by focusing on teacher mental health and career sustainability.
